Position Overview:

Working under the leadership of Director, Regulatory Advocacy, implements and develops our global regulatory harmonization initiatives on food additives and contaminants to protect existing ingredients and to support product innovation and growth. Analyzes the impact of proposed new global food standards and seeks opportunities for regulatory alignment to remove barriers to business growth. Develops beverage industry positions on international food standards and monitors the work of international organizations such as FAO, WHO, Codex Alimentarius Commission, and WTO. Further, provides guidance to The Coca-Cola Company's global Scientific & Regulatory Affairs team and other company functions on current and proposed regulations.

Function Specific Activities:

Function Related Activities/Key Responsibilities (Top 5-8 core responsibilities)

  • Analyze, provide advice, and help develop strategies on proposed global food standards and potential trade issues related to food additives and contaminants relevant to foods and beverages (e.g., Codex, WHO, FAO, WTO)
  • Prepare and advocate company positions on global food standards to internal and external stakeholders
  • Identify opportunities for regulatory alignment in collaboration with the Scientific & Regulatory Affairs network and manage such projects
  • Provide guidance on regulatory issues to internal clients and help develop innovative solutions
  • Guide and assist in preparing regulatory submissions on beverage ingredients to global organizations and other regulatory authorities
  • Manage the distribution of information on global standards, positions, and other regulatory information to internal clients as needed

Education Requirements: 

  • Master's Degree in toxicology, food science, or equivalent required. PhD is a plus.

Related Work Experience: 

  • 5-10 years of work experience
  • Regulatory affairs:  Experience in beverage or food industry in scientific and regulatory affairs or relevant related field in food industry, government or related industry in similar roles managing regulatory issues impacting products, ingredients, and labeling
  • International organizations:  Experience in international food standard setting processes and reviewing and analyzing proposed standards
  • Advocacy:  Understanding of the key issues and the relevant regulatory and scientific proof points to support regulatory advocacy by developing positions to support innovation of ingredients, products, or labeling.
  • Ingredients:  Understanding the technological need for food additives and typical contaminants found in foods and their regulatory principles defining the permissibility and limitations of use.
  • Trade associations:  Understanding of key trade associations and global regulatory policy landscape affecting food and beverage industry

Functional Skills:

  • Additives and Contaminants Knowledge: Knowledge of the supply chain, usage and risks associated with food additives and contaminants (e.g. naturally occurring toxicants, metals). Knowledge of regulatory principles defining the permissibility and limitations of use of food additives and unintentional presence of contaminants.
  • Additives and Contaminants Regulatory Landscape: Knowledge of the international regulatory and public policy landscape trends and understanding of implications in beverage innovation and current portfolio. Understanding of consumer and NGO pressures and opinion trends that are likely to pose restrictions or opportunities in beverage innovation and current portfolio.
  • Global and Supernational Authorities: Understanding how national and supranational authorities (e.g., USFDA, EU, WHO, JECFA, Codex Alimentarius) influence the regulatory environment
  • Experience on global food standards: Knowledge on key global food standards (e.g., Codex) and experience in the standard setting processes ability for critically reviewing proposed global standards and writing comments in response.
  • Position Development: Ensuring that our business is not unduly restricted by onerous policies or regulations and enabling business growth.  This requires an understanding of the key issues and the relevant, credible science; the ability to assess risk; skills in strategic thinking and planning; the ability to build and articulate complex scientific arguments in a clear and compelling way; and the ability to partner with, collaborate with, and/or influence key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaboration and Influencing: Ability to partner with stakeholders (internal or external) to constructively shape opinions and further key objectives
