Position Overview:

This role is a grade 12

Provide technical packaging leadership to meet the short-term and longer-term business needs (2-3 years) (category, packaging type/material, ...).

Responsible for implementation of packaging development initiatives (and programs) and ensuring that these initiatives are efficiently and effectively managed across the system in collaboration with our business units in EMEA.

Function Specific Activities:

A. JOB SUMMARY: 

Provide technical packaging leadership to meet the short-term and longer-term business needs (2-3 years) (category, packaging type/material, ...).

Responsible for implementation of packaging development initiatives (and programs) and ensuring that these initiatives are efficiently and effectively managed across the system in collaboration with our business units in EMEA.

B. KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Innovation pipeline and packaging projects:

  • Proactively manage the process of new packaging innovation, development, introductions and improvements.
  • Understand the expectations of consumers, customers and the Coca-Cola system for EMEA packaging development. Ensure innovation pipeline (packaging, incl. part of full product bundle) based on this understanding and work. This includes deep understanding of cross-system business case development.
  • Review and recommend packaging innovative ideas for new business opportunities outside of the present operating structures.
  • Maintain and develop the technical skills and expertise in packaging design, functionality and application.
  • Develops design briefs and specifications. Manage testing of new concept prototypes.
  • Plays active role in overall category management / innovation thinking and pipeline building.

Subject Matter Expert

  • SME Expertise for a given packaging category (PET, closures, glass, ..)
  • Solid technical skills and expertise in packaging design, functionality and application. Maintain expert knowledge of current and emerging technologies in said area of expertise.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the competitive landscape (within and outside the beverage industry)
  • Leads technical area of expertise. Ensure sharing of knowledge and support to other categories by active participation in communities of practice. Maintain on an on-going basis the assigned supplier/technology pipelines.
  • Acts as consultant to BU's within EMEA (category, packaging/material SME)

Communication:

  • Need substantial persuasive skill
  • Proactively provide ideas to marketing, technical and R&D leadership team.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external network in his/her area of responsibility
  • Cultivate good relationship with Marketing, Technical and commercialization functions
  • Negotiate with suppliers to ensure optimal support / execution

Functional Skills: Must be knowledgeable in the following areas:

  • Understanding of the basic functions of packaging and knowledge of the common primary and secondary packaging media and systems used within the packaged ready to drink beverage industry
  • Understanding of the way in which packaging can be used to build brand equity and consumer preference
  • Understanding of packaging cost influences
  • Understanding of interactions between packaging, process and product to enable packaging recommendation (quality)
  • Understanding of environmental issues associated with the production and disposal of packaging materials.
  • Understanding the basic relationships between package design, materials properties, environmental influences, and package performance.

 In addition, must have specific subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Packaging Materials Science
  • Polymer chemistry, metallurgy, paper science or glass chemistry
  • Package Manufacturing Technologies
    • Plastic conversion technologies (injection molding, blow molding, film production, etc.)
    • Metal forming technologies
    • Glass forming technologies
    • Package decoration technologies
  • Package filling and handling techniques and their influence on package performance
  • Package recycling technologies
  • Package evaluation techniques
  • Laboratory evaluation techniques
  • Planning, organisation and execution of line trials and in-market tests, and the appropriate data gathering and analysis techniques.
  • Package design
  • Packaging regulatory requirements.
  • Industrial packaging of liquid materials

C. ORGANIZATION IMPACT/ INFLUENCE: Indicate the nature and level of your contacts within and outside the Company, as well as the nature and purpose of the interaction.

E. RELATED JOB REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS:

Working Experience:

  • At least 8 years successful package design experience in the FMCG + 4-6 successful experience in food industry.

E. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS:

Master degree in engineering or related field.

F. CULTURAL DIVERSITY:

Fluent in English.

Additional language is a plus.
